I made a custom paint scheme for the old game in this style, but I liked it so much I decided to tackle it again. It's a shame there's no method for importing paint schemes between versions (the body style is the same for Gen5 cars) or sharing them. Either way, I still need to make a few tweaks. I want to add the C-Post Dodge dealers logo, and the mini Evernham Motorsports logo.
I started with the Chevy base model for the Gen6 car, because of the smoother front and the headlights/tail lights were closest to what the old Intrepids had around 2001-2002

#9 Bill Elliott Coors Motorcraft Ford Thunderbird
In case you haven't noticed, I'm a Bill Elliott fan. I modified my 1985 version of his car to the blue striped Thunderbird he ran a few years later. I think this version actually works a bit better with the game's modern body style.
Check out the huge amount of negative camber on that front right tire. For those of you chomping at the bit for a good Talladega setup, there's a hint for ya. More on that later.
The front-left tire has maxed out positive camber. Not exactly photogenic.
#9 Bill Elliott Coors & Melling Oil Pumps Ford Thunderbird
I decided to see if I could make the current body of the car even somewhat work as an old 1985 Thunderbird (back from the days when the cars had vastly different styles.) I think it worked out okay from certain angles, but less so from others. There's that spoiler-color glitch that needs to be fixed; it should be white. I still need to do some work on the car, such as creating the Melling Performance Parts logo that goes on the back. If anyone has a good image of that logo, leave a comment please. I haven't been able to find a good high resolution pic of it.
NTG:IL Crash Pictures - 02
One thing I've noticed is that actually flipping your car is relatively difficult compared to previous NASCAR games. I don't know if this is an intentional element of realism reflecting the effectiveness of all the modern safety features which you can see deploy or if it's just an attempt to limit glitches. Still, it can be done. And the roof can at least be superficially damaged.
Side Note: The spoiler of the car often reverts to the body color of the car. While this Coors Light car is still incomplete, I had to make the whole body white and paint the front blue, a bigger hassle than just adding white to the back and lower sides. This is the only way to make the spoiler match for now. Hopefully this glitch will be fixed in a patch.
Notice the water coming out of the barrels.
Either that, or I just ran over Alex Mack.

The smoke and spark effects remain a stand-out graphics improvement for this game.
Let us pause for a moment of reflection.
Still, if you know where to go, you can catch some great air.
Even backwards.
NASCAR The Game: Inside Line - Headlight Glitch
There are some useful features in the NTG:IL paint shop that weren't there in the previous game. For one, there's an automatic number system that even gives you the option of changing the outline color. You unfortunately can't change the size of the numbers, though, meaning you often have to do numbers manually to make your car look right. The game does include small "contingency" sponsors, which you had to redo manually in the previous game. This is a great addition. As in the previous game, you can turn on or off the manufacturer headlights and custom grill styles. You can also select colors for your wheels, fin, spoilers, etc.
I have noticed a few glitches though. For one, the spoiler cannot be painted or written on. Any attempt to put a design on it will just go through. This wouldn't matter, except the spoiler color selector simply doesn't work very often.

This spoiler is supposed to be white. It reverts automatically to whatever color the main body of the car is.
There are other issues with things "resetting" as well. Because of the number-sizing issue, I've often just turned off the automatic number stickers and made my own. They have an annoying tendency to turn back on at random, turning the sides and roof of the car into an unreadable jumble.
The same thing happens with the headlight stickers, but with a weird twist. If you're trying to make a car from a different era, it's often useful to turn them off. The game will randomly choose to turn them on. As an added, "fuck you," it rotates them 180 degrees, making your car look glitched out.
This:
Becomes this:
Notice how the small squares mid-way up are also glitched out.
Those are supposed to be white rectangles:
Luckily, the problem with the numbers and headlights can be easily solved by going back in to edit your paint scheme, making sure those stickers are set to "off," and re-saving it.
